Users review: War of the Worlds Steven Spielberg is the third film in which aliens visiting Earth, but the first in which your intentions are malevolent. Can not be a coincidence that the arrival of the ETS is announced with strange lights flashing between low clouds, as in ce3k. From there, the similarity ends - the light show as friendly aliens came to a closer look. These guys (presumably Martians, as in the original HG Wells novel) arent interested in making beautiful, or there is ambiguity about its ultimate goal (as it was for most ce3k). They are here to wipe us off the face of the planet, pure and simple, we mean a point before the movie played by even half an hour, and the giant walking tripods were deployed is brutally efficient. So, too, is the film - to scare the hell out of us, though some of the plot holes open (what's up with this camcorder, at least) and a pair sequences that are too remember other movies (especially Independence Day and Spielbergs own Jurassic Park). Spielberg that uses images alluding to 9/11, the Holocaust, and possibly the siege of London during the Second World War is, for me, less exploitation than a reflection of the seriousness with which he want the audience to take on the chaos screen. The atmosphere is heavy with menace, and the description of the population numb with shock destruction is frighteningly convincing, despite some cheesy moments Hollywood. We do not have Will Smith delivers agile one-liners immediately after millions are slaughtered by invading alien forces, or IRU4. Nor is there a lot of rah-rah, lets kick-alien-ass-some humor as earthlings outmatched trying to fight. Even the ostensible hero (discrete, effective Tom Cruise) crumples at one point under the enormity of what is happening.Im not really sure what the messages complained about insufficient action and FX speak. It seems to me the tripods were almost constant presence (if not always in the foreground) back on 15 minutes mark. And in fact, the war of the title is delivered from the start - not just their level of humans against aliens battle that some viewers apparently expected.
